Then I second-guessed myself, finding fault with what I originally treasured, wondering if I was getting tired and resorting to an easy gimmick. This is what the ‘cold light of day’ is for and why you look forward to ‘sleeping on it’; reappraisal is essential. Either your initial excitement is warranted and a golden goose egg has landed in your lap, or your instincts, honed by years of humiliating missteps, have saved you from hyping the discovery of fool’s gold, the sort of mistake your discerning readers must be protected from like the blind from an unexpected precipice.
